This time of year, the IRS sees a huge surge in tax returns – which means everyone has a questions that need answering. The IRS is notoriously understaffed. It is not uncommon to wait long periods of time on hold waiting to speak to someone.
While there are tools available to taxpayers on IRS.gov (Interactive Tax Assistant, Tax Topics, FAQs, and Tax Trails), it’s not the same as talking through a question or problem with a person. While helpful, navigating these tools requires that you know the correct terminology or even what you’re asking.
