On September 1st, 1987 Peoples Income Tax opened its doors for the first time! To celebrate our grand opening, we did a fundraiser for the Virginia Home for Boys (now the Virginia Home for Boys & Girls). We mailed invitations to hundreds of friends and community leaders urging them to stop by the grand opening and get their “tax shelter” for only $5! The people invited did not see the tax shelter until they came to the grand opening.
We sold the “Tack Shelters” for $5 each. They came with a label stating “handmade by the young men at the Virginia Home for Boys.” All proceeds were donated to the Boys Home. They were crafted by the boys in their wood workshop from 2”x4” boards. We provided the lumber, paint, tacks and printed labels. Our Boys Home promotion was in keeping with the spirit of the “Community Service” pledge of our Peoples Income Tax Guiding Principles – principles that have never changed.
“Several politicians also attended, including Dick Glover (who sadly passed away this year). Dick loved his Tack Shelter and kept it on his desk as a conversation piece. I remember one very nice woman attending our grand opening (who became a client of Peoples Tax). She handed me a $100 bill and I said ‘Great! Thank You! I will give you your 20 tax shelters.’ She said ‘No, just sell them to other people.’”, recalls Chuck McCabe, Founder and CEO.
Peoples Tax and grown and expanded quite a bit over the years! We are so thankful for our clients, our Peoples Tax family, and the Richmond community.
